Bike Patrol Program

In July of 1994, the Horseheads Police Department started Chemung County’s first bicycle patrol unit. Horseheads police mountain bike patrol originally began as a pilot program with two officers and has since expanded into a thorough departmental division. The bicycle patrol unit currently consists of three police equipped mountain bikes and eight certified police bicycle patrol officers. Bicycles have proven to be a tremendous asset; not only as another means of law enforcement patrol, but also as an unprecedented community relations tool.
Current Patrol Bicycles
- One GT XCR 3000 full suspension bike
- Two Gary Fisher Sugar 3 full suspension mountain bikes
The community has been very receptive to the bicycle patrol officers. Interaction between bicycle officers and residents has steadily increased since the program was implemented. The bike officers who patrol neighborhoods and business districts have proven to be a great deterrent to crime and positive role model for the children.
