The Horseheads Police Department provides full time law enforcement services to the Village of Horseheads, NY encompassing 4 square miles and serves a resident population of approximately 6,500 people. The Department consists of a Chief of Police, 3 Sergeants, 7 Police Officers, 2 part-time Police Officers, a Clerk, and 1 Village Hall Security Officer.  There are 5 patrol vehicles in the fleet as well as 3 police bikes. 

Mission

The Mission of the Horseheads Police Department is to preserve the rights of the citizens and reduce the fear in the community through the prevention of crime, the protection of persons and property, maintenance of order in public places, and the anticipation and response to events that threaten public order, life, and property.

It is essential that all members of the Horseheads Police Department remember that in the execution of their duties that they act not for themselves or any one person, but for the good of the public. They shall respect and protect the rights of individuals and perform their duties with honesty, zeal, courage, discretion, impartiality, fidelity, and sound judgment.

Chief of Police Michael Suhey

Chief Mike Suhey and Officer Mike Hess

Chief Michael Suhey joined the Horseheads Village Police Department as a part-time officer in 2018 and was appointed Police Chief March 11, 2022. He served with the Elmira Police Department for 21 years, retiring as Lieutenant. While at EPD, he was quartermaster, field training officer, instructor, accreditation manager, D.A.R.E. officer, and bike patrol officer. 

Before moving to the Southern Tier, Chief Suhey spent 2 years as Deputy with the Laramie County Sheriff's Department in Cheyenne, Wyoming and 8 years with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department in Syracuse, New York. 

Chief Mike Suhey received a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany.

Mike is active with Chemung County Habitat for Humanity and Horseheads Sister City Association. He and his wife enjoy outdoor activities, gardening, and working on their hobby farm.
